On the Five Characteristics of Academic Journal Editors’ Cognition

Abstract: The entire process of editing activities is inseparable from human cognition, especially for academic journal editors who face a large volume of cognitive inputs daily from various sources, particularly those originating from authors. Therefore, it becomes an important and practical issue to better handle these cognitive inflows and to ensure that the editor’s own cognition reflects greater accuracy and correctness, artistry and scientific nature, while reducing error, blindness, and arbitrariness. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study of the cognitive characteristics of academic journal editors and fully grasp five important features: the interconnectedness of cognition, the proactive injection of cognition, the strategic allocation of cognition, the creative synthesis of cognition, and the reflective afterthought of cognition. This understanding helps editors avoid narrow-mindedness, biases, and obstacles in cognition, establishing a broader, more accurate, and more advanced editorial cognition.
