Will international mobility of scientists enhance their collaborative capabilities? From the perspective of ego-network

摘要: [目的/意义]从自我中心网络视角研究科学家跨国流动对其合作能力的影响,能够揭示科学家跨国流动前后合作能力的动态演变。[方法/过程]使用SciSciNet数据集,选取计算科学领域的1,229位跨国流动科学家作为研究样本,构建自我中心网络,通过平均合作者数量、合作深度、合作持续性对科学家流动前后的合作能力进行计算,采取Mann-Whitne检验分析跨国流动前后科学家合作能力的变化。进而对每一位科学家进行Chow检验,识别出哪些科学家跨国流动前后合作能力显著变化,通过相关分析和回归分析对导致这种显著变化的潜在影响因素进行分析。[结果/结论](1)跨国流动能够增加科学家的平均合作者数量,扩大合作规模。与跨国流动前相比,科学家的合作深度有显著差异,跨国流动后的合作深度都有所提升。(2)跨国流动前后合作能力显著变化的科学家在H指数、发文量以及被引量方面表现要优于其他跨国流动的科学家,对于那些跨国流动前后合作者数量显著变化的科学家,被引量越高,在流动后合作者数量增加得反而较少。(3)H指数、被引量对科学家国际流动前后的合作者数量有显著积极的影响。研究结果丰富了对人才流动规律的认识,促进跨国流动与合作,为跨国流动与合作能力之间的关系提供一定的理论依据与实证支撑。

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] This study examines the impact of scientists’ international mobility on their collaborative abilities from the perspective of self-centered networks, revealing the dynamic evolution of collaborative abilities before and after their international movement. [Methods/Process] Using the SciSciNet dataset, a sample of 1,229 internationally mobile scientists in the field of computational science was selected. A self-centered network was constructed, and the collaborative abilities of scientists before and after their mobility were calculated based on the average number of collaborators, depth of collaboration, and collaboration sustainability. The Mann-Whitney test was employed to analyze changes in collaborative abilities before and after international mobility. Furthermore, a Chow test was conducted for each scientist to identify those whose collaborative abilities significantly changed. Potential influencing factors leading to this significant change were analyzed through correlation and regression analysis. [Results/Conclusion] (1) International mobility increases the average number of collaborators for scientists, thereby expanding the scope of collaboration. There is a significant difference in the depth of collaboration before and after international mobility, with an overall improvement in collaborative depth after mobility. (2) Scientists whose collaborative abilities significantly changed before and after international mobility performed better in terms of H-index, publication volume, and citation counts compared to other internationally mobile scientists. For those scientists with significant changes in the number of collaborators before and after mobility, higher citation counts correlated with a smaller increase in the number of collaborators post-mobility. (3) The H-index and citation counts have a significant positive effect on the number of collaborators before and after international mobility. The research findings enrich the understanding of talent mobility patterns, promote international mobility and collaboration, and provide a theoretical basis and empirical support for the relationship between international mobility and collaborative abilities.
