Cultural Adaptation and the Challenges of Identity and Discrimination among Chinese Canadians

Abstract: In the context of globalization and multicultural coexistence, the Chinese community in Canada faces complex challenges related to cultural identity and discrimination. Cultural identity serves not only as the core element of self-definition for this group but also as a critical defense against discrimination during their integration into mainstream society. Strong cultural identity, while helping individuals resist external exclusion and prejudice, may also exacerbate tensions with the dominant culture. Throughout this dynamic process, the Chinese community seeks a balance between identity and social integration through cultural preservation, innovation, and adaptation. Although multicultural policies offer institutional support, limitations in policy implementation and societal bias continue to negatively affect the social standing of the Chinese community. By analyzing cultural identity, discrimination perception, community coping strategies, and policy interactions, the study reveals the key pathways through which this group strives for equality and cultural confidence in a multicultural environment.
